You wiped away the
You wiped away the filesystem when you formatted the drive. You can still recover a lot of the data. Any data that has not been overwritten by new data (the Ubuntu standard system takes up less than three gigs of space) can still be carved out. Use Photorec or foremost.
could you direct me on how
could you direct me on how to use photorec as I am finding it impossible to use

But you will need to mount a filesystem with enough space to hold the data (i.e. not the same disk you are recovering data from). If you are not comfortable with the command line, then ubuntu-rescue-remix is not the best option for you.
I have another blank
I have another blank hardrive would that do instead of mounting a file system.
and do I have to use Ubuntu-rescue-remix to use photorec or are they standalone seperate?
Well, you would need to
Well, you would need to create a filesystem on that harddrive, if there isn't one there already.
You can use Photorec from an Ubuntu installation or even from the live cd. Just connect to the net and install the "testdisk" package - it contains photorec. There is a version of Photorec for Windows, but I can't say whether it works or not - I've never used it. I don't find that Windows handles faulty drives as well as a Unix-type operating system
After some trouble with my
After some trouble with my Kubuntu/WindowsXP dual boot, I decided to install ubuntu 9.10 with the "use entire disk option", similar like OP. I only care about recovering my Windows partition (NTFS).
I used Hiren's Boot CD to attempt to recover the partitions. The tool Active Partition Recovery was able to display/preview my Windows Partition and allowed me to preview the file names. However, after 'restoring' the NTFS partition, Ubuntu USB live session was not able to mount this partition from the disk. The https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DataRecovery page didn't help me out.
My HD0 has broken sata connectors, which still work as long as they are plugged in, but this cancels out the possibility to plug my disk into another computer.
Summary: files are recognized and appear to be intact, however, I am not able to retrieve my files and backup them.
What should/shouldn't I do now, does anybody have any suggestions?
Where was the NTFS
Where was the NTFS partition? Was it the first one on the drive?
To recover your data, I don't think that just restoring the partition table to point to where the partition used to be will be enough. The filrsystem was overwritten when it was formatted to EXT and then Ubuntu installed on top.
You can repartition the drive to approximately where the old NTFS partition was, then use Photorec to file-carve and recover some files for you.
