Reformatted NTFS

Ok, sorry if this has been answered so far, but I couldn't find any case studies or forums threads which provided a working solution.

I was not concentrating when I was doing this. Basically, I had an ntfs partition with a windows installation plus documents and many files. I used gparted to reformat the disk to ntfs. Immediately realizing what I did I unmounted and attempted recovery.

I'm particularly interesting in recovering .doc, .docx, and .iso

Is the data lost? If not, what tool would you recommend to recover this data?

Hi Vonranke, You need to use

Hi Vonranke,

You need to use file-carving to recover individual files from the partition. The filesystem itself cannot be restored because you wrote over it, but a lot of the raw data is still there - formatting does not overwrite all the data on the partition.

Mount another drive to store the recovered files ( you cannot recover the files in-situ), and tyr Photorec or foremost.

Thanks for the reply. I

Thanks for the reply. I think this is going to be an all night job. I've been fooling around with foremost but it seems to waste processor space, even though the verbose output stays vacant for two hours. I'll give this a try later, but for the time being I'll leave the drive unmounted.

Hi Vonranke, I have done the

Hi Vonranke,

I have done the exact same thing. But I didn't do it by mistake. My HD with an NTFS file system just got corrupted and I was unable to mount it in either Windows or Linux. So, I formatted the hard drive and was able to mount it. Then I used Easy Recovery to try to recover the data, and it did show me all the stuff that was in the disk. Only thing is that I lost a lot of folders, which now seemed to be in a lost folder. While I was trying to recover the data, easy recovery crashed. So, I decided to unmount the drives and not touch it again. After doing some research on the net I found out about the data recovery tools in the linux world, and in particular about ubuntu-rescue-remix.

Reading about your post and the responses gave me some hints as to what to do in order to recover my data.

Thanks a lot for the tips and let me know what your results were.

All the best,

Fidel.
