No dev file being created for USB Hard Drive
Hi Everyone,
I have an old 2.5 ide disk from a friend that he wanted me to get the files off of as it was failing but I have put it into my usb caddy and it will not load a dev file.
Here is the dmesg output

Once I can get device file I'll use ddrecover to get an image but until then I'm stumped!
Any help would be great.
Thanks,

This is not a software
This is not a software problem - it's your hard drive. It's not about skill, it's about luck at this point. All you can hope for is that it is able to power up one last time and start spitting out data. Keep trying.
When I'm faced with your situation, I tend to plug in the device and take a look at the logs. If I can see that the drive is trying to come to life, I try running ddrescue using the device that it eventually will be. In this case, that's sdb.
I'll keep re-running the command every few seconds for about 30 seconds. Then I will unplug and replug the device and hope that I get lucky.
Listen to the drive. If it clicks exactly the same way every time you try, the outlook is bleak. If the noises it makes sound slightly different, you still have a chance to get lucky. To me, that's the difference between a click and "the click of death".
Set yourself up so that if you get it going, you don't have to interrupt the process. Treat every time the drive powers up as if it's the last time it ever will. In my case, I run from a laptop with a good battery and my USB enclosure is powered by a UPS.
Good luck.
