Retrieving information from Ricoh Copier

Hello,
Our ricoh copier has crashed, and right now i am searching for stored files on this device's harddisk. The IDE hdd is connected with a usb convertor from ebay, and i tried to get data of it with Testdisk and Photorec, but there is no data to be found.
The disk is 20GB large, and there must be data on it. Is there any other way to get data from it?

Also, when you plug in the drive, what does
tail -f /var/log/messages
say?
