How-To Recover WinXP on Netbook

I'm trying to recover the data in a Windows XP NTFS partition on a Dell Netbook. When I tried to view the NTFS partition it shows empty in Gparted run from a LiveCD.

My daughter said that she received a warning from her virus program just seconds before Windows crashed. She could not get Windows to boot.

Ubuntu LiveCD runs fime from a USB CD-ROM drive, however the NTFS local folder can not be opened. Ubuntu says that the it is already mounted as /media/localfolder (or something like that).

Does anyone have an idea how I can repair the NTFS file system from the Ubuntu Rescue Remix LiveCD?

First off, I would image the partition to another drive. You don't want to attempt to do anything that will put your data at risk. Imaging the drive and then working onthe image is the safest way to go.

Once you imaged the partition, you can try to rebuild the MFT using testdisk. See here:

Testdisk is included in Ubuntu-Rescue-Remix.
