Recover Ubuntu Lucid after automatic update
Hello,
The most recent automatic update has killed my OS.
The problem is I need to recover folders and files sitting on my desktop. So I proceeded to boot from a liveCD thinking that I could then navigate to my home\Dana\Desktop and recover my folders/files but when I navigated to \home, there wasn't anything to recover.
Someone had told me about Ubuntu Rescue Remix. I downloaded v.10.04 and made an ISO image. I put the freshly created Ubuntu Rescue Remix in my CDRom drive. The system booted up prompting for boot: "drive" and the CDRom has been blinking like it is working for at least 10 hours now. Is this normal? Has anyone successfully tried out Ubuntu Rescue Remix? Please let me know. My heart is sinking thinking that I may not be able to recover my folders/files.
What else should I have done to recover these folders?
Thanks for reading.

Hello Dana. The Rescue Remix
Hello Dana.
The Rescue Remix takes between 35 seconds to two minutes to boot. 10 hours is not right. I suspect that something is wrong with your computer. I don't think any recent Ubuntu updates have been reported to trash any system. Since the Ubuntu live CD as well as the rescue remix are giving you trouble, I would suggest you look for hardware problems.
First off, run memtest from any of the ubuntu live disks (including the Rescue Remix.) Bad ram symptoms usually look like software bugs. Also, check to see that your fans are still working and that your computer is not overheating.
Try removing the drive and browsing it on another computer. If the filesystem is corrupt, I can help you find your files.
Thanks, Andrew, for your
Thanks, Andrew, for your post. I couldn't make Ubuntu Rescue Remix to work; however, I was able to extract all of my files from rebooting again using a liveCD. Whew...
I am now running Linux Mint Isadora and very happy with it.
Thanks again for your post. You are such a wonderful being!
