Erased ENTIRE Hard Drive when installing Ubuntu
Hey,
I desperately Need help!
When Ubuntu refused to use its automated partition size (35gig wasn't enough apparently) I chose "Use whole hard drive" thinking that it was simply going to install Ubuntu onto the main hard drive and integrate the existing files into the OS. I also figured it'd warn me if it was going to do anything drastic (like format my hard drive!)...
And it never said it was erasing, just "Copying"
By the way, I had a separate backup partition but it destroyed that aswell :-(
Anyway, not trying to pass blame. So far I want to keep ubuntu, but I desperately NEED all of those files I lost back!
So if anyone can guide me through the process as best as possible, the Hopefully things will work out.
Can you help me? Please, for all good things, I desperately need it right now!
Thank you,
Chris!

You can get back a lot of
You can get back a lot of your data. How much depends on how big your drive is.
You need to obtain another drive onto which you will store the saved files - you can't do it "in place".
See the documentation section on how to use Photorec or Foremost to data-carve the files from your formatted HD.
Good luck.

My Hard Drive is a 200Gb Hard Drive and was about 100Gb full...
What's my chances?
Anyway, thanks for the program recommendations. I'll give them a go.
Still can't believe I did this.

Which Version of Photorec do I need for the newest version of Ubuntu???

Just use the one in the
Just use the one in the repositories. If you are running from the live cd (which you should be doing) enable the universe repo (community supported) and run
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install photorec
That will install photorec into your ramdisk and not touch the drive you want to rescue files from.
Well I got like 80+
Well I got like 80+ gigabytes back so I pretty happy.
Thanks for the help.
Any idea how I can sort out the mess though?
I've got a lot of "f5802967.txt" files which I think are the itunes/ipod files.
Not sure how I should approach sorting them out? the mp3 are named just like the .txt so I need to work out how to make the .txt files apply their information to the mp3 etc
Any suggestions?
Chris
You can use lltag, tagtool
You can use lltag, tagtool or mp3rename.
Example:

I was about to "use entire hard drive" to perform the install. Then I read where it said something about formatting/erasing. I didn't want to take a chance, so I canceled installation and will see what I can do with this new OS by other means.
The risks really should be made much clearer, I'd say.
Thanks for the info.
